SWF Address – Simplified.

7.25.08

SWFAddress provides deep linking for Flash…sounded great until I downloaded it and couldn’t make any sense of it. Poor documentation. I messed around with it for a day, couldn’t figure it out and set it aside. Eventually I would have to figure it out for a site I am doing at work…I e-mailed two crazy flash guys who said it wasn’t something they could explain in ten minutes or less, so basically good luck, go learn some javascript…

I came across two sites that show how to use SWFAddress on the simplest level and finally figured it out. Liam R gives a great example with all the source files. Thanks Liam. Here is another example, but only the .fla file. Between those two it should be much easier to figure out! Good luck.

SWFFit is also a great script that works with SWFObject 2.0 to resize your flash movie so it always fits in the browser, although I couldn’t get it to work with the SWFAddress. Enough of the code nerd stuff for the day…yay for Fridays!

PicsEngine – Translated

6.08.08

Jen | nerd. photos. tech. //

I found this really amazing dynamic open-source photo gallery, PicsEngine. It is hands down the best free flash image gallery I have ever seen. However, everything is in French, which makes it pretty hard to understand…until you whip out a little bit of google translate and a whole lot of patience. Then it makes some sort of sense or another. WIth the help of the translator and finding the ‘language’ file and re-translating everything to English…I was able to figure out how to download, upload, and create my own test gallery with a bunch of photos I have laying around…Check it out.

PicsEngine has a really easy to use and user friendly admin section. You can have albums and sub-albums, descriptions, photo comments, an RSS feed, a download link etc. Pretty awesome. Hit me up if you want to use it and you need some help!

The Amazing Tilt Viewer

3.09.08

Jen | inspiration. nerd. tech. //

Charles sent me a link to Tilt Viewer the other day. It is a free dynamic flash gallery. You can purchase it if you want to make some serious changes, but the free version is still really sweet and customizable! I made a quick one with a collection of my b&w 35mm photos, check it here. Click on the “tiltviewer” text in the lower right corner and it will take you to the site to download it…
